Floreat's Bob Howard Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia
After more than 50 years patrolling Perth beaches, it would be fair to say salt runs through the veins of surf lifesaving veteran Robert Howard.
His commitment to Floreat Surf Life Saving Club, in particular with training new members, has been recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia.
Mr Howard was shocked to hear of his win and said he kept returning to Floreat every summer simply because he "enjoyed helping others".

His roles with the club and Surf Life Saving WA make are extensive and include stints as a crewman on the rescue helicopter, State first aid officer, radio officer, examination officer and a member of the board of examiners.
He is also a life member of SLSWA and Surf Life Saving Australia.
Mr Howard has spent his life near the ocean and said while he was still a patrolling member at Floreat, he was now mainly involved with the education side of surf lifesaving.
"It was a hell of a shock when I heard that I had won," Mr Howard said. "It's great down here. I just like helping other people." Mr Howard joined Port Beach Surf Life Saving Club in 1955 then moved to Floreat in 1970 where he has been since, thanks to the club's camaraderie and atmosphere.
Retired for eight years, Mr Howard now splits his time between the surf club and his volunteer duties with St John Ambulance, a role he has held since 1968.
