Shark Patrol Information

As part of the helicopter service, Surf Life Saving WA have taken over the State Governments Shark Spotting patrol service. This contract will add another component to the service that the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter provides to the community as it flies up the metropolitan coast.

With the helicopter's manoeuvrability, good viewing options, ability to fly at varying heights and to hover over potential sightings the shark spotting service will be well equipped to protect beach goers this summer. The Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter is also fitted with GPS technology that can be used to pin point potential sightings, as well as a siren to alert swimmers and the latest communication equipment to alert surf lifesavers on the beach and Water Police.

Tips to minimise the risk of a shark attack:

• Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches.
• Avoid time in/on the water around dusk and dawn - when most fish are feeding and sharks are likely to be active.
• Avoid areas where there are large schools of fish, or among seals and close to rookeries.
• Avoid areas where animal, human or fish waste enter the water.
• Avoid deep-water channels or drop-offs nearby.
• Do not swim in murky water.
• Do not remain in the water with bleeding wounds.
• If you see a shark, leave the water as quickly and calmly as possible. Avoid excessive splashing or noise.
